Knowing When To Halt

By

day started with a prayer
as the sun passes by
en route like the mailman to his usual place
carrot juice and the morning paper
internet chatter keeps me company
facebook taggers tweeters
the fallen spoken of as if the missing link to the truth
clumsy wisdom seeker ready to wage war
trying to make understanding of God’s word
with feeble suspicious minds
challenging everthing like mad men on a warpath
to see into the deep abyss of time before now
stood on the brink of history but was too afraid to step in
so i just read a poem about it
an asian woman asked “can I shake your hand”
“…wow I learned so much about your history through your poetry” she said
two brothers followed in kind slapping fives
saying “bro that was dope”
“sounded like jayz or some of that def poetry”
“heck i didn’t know you were that deep”
responding i looked in their eyes to not be confused
“i am not sure how deep you have to be to know your own history”
so i hope something i said could change your minds
slapped fives goodbye
burnt cigarette smolders on asphalt
reminds me of time left
slow burning like ingested poisons
must live to accomplish mission
no time for meaningless battles despite the mental challenges
intelligence called to questioned
must learn patience as virtue
learning when to halt
is something i must do
