The Biography of Tshombe Sekou Harris

The Leader. The Poet. The Presence.

Tshombe Sekou Harris is a man of two worlds: the disciplined, high-stakes environment of naval command and the introspective, lyrical realm of the poetic memoirist. After 32 years of distinguished service in the United States Navy, culminating in his role as a Command Master Chief, Tshombe is transitioning into a new season of “People, Purpose, and Presence.”

From the Sea to the Page Born in New Orleans and raised in Israel, Tshombe’s perspective has been shaped by the intersection of diverse cultures and the vast horizons of the sea. Enlisting in 1994, he rose through the ranks as a Hebrew Linguist and Religious Program Specialist before ascending to the Command Senior Enlisted Leader (CSEL) community. His military tenure—marked by leadership roles on the USS Rafael Peralta and USS Scout—was defined by a commitment to the “human element” within the machine of war.

A Poetic Rumen Parallel to his military service, Tshombe has cultivated a prolific literary life under the name Tshombe Sekou. Though college educated he did not matriculate in literature, but that didn’t limit his studies in poetics, but allowed him to have a raw perspective in self-learning poetics. As a practitioner of poetics, he is the author of several collections, including Adrift: Family and the SeaThe Poet, and Sakura | Matcha. His work explores the “significance of the deemed insignificant,” using the Japanese philosophy of Kintsugi—finding beauty in the broken—as a metaphor for the veteran experience and the human condition.

The Next Chapter Based in Arlington, TN, Tshombe is now dedicating his post-retirement chapter to the spoken and written word. He stands at a unique vantage point, offering lectures and keynotes that blend the strategic grit of a Master Chief with the empathetic depth of a philosopher. Whether speaking on the complexities of organizational leadership or the transformative power of naming one’s own story, he remains a steadfast advocate for healing and justice.

“I am interested in the space where the silence ends and the naming begins.” — Tshombe Sekou
